– Christie’s has announced the 21st Century Evening Sale, taking place on Tuesday, May 14, 2024 at 8PM live in Christie’s Rockefeller Center saleroom in the heart of New York City, directly following The Rosa de la Cruz Collection Evening Sale, the inaugural sale of Christie’s Spring Marquee Week. The 21st Century Evening sale is a survey of contemporary artwork reflective of generations past, present, and future. Presenting masterpieces from the 1980s through to visionary expressions of foremost creators of today, the offerings in this sale are demonstrative of the seismic shifts to the artistic landscape over the course of the late 20th century to present day.
The sale’s leading highlights include Brice Marden’s Event (estimate: $30,000,000 – 50,000,000) and Jean-Michel Basquiat’s The Italian Version of Popeye has no Pork in his Diet (estimate on request; in excess of $30,000,000) The sale also features two exemplary canvases by Julie Mehretu: Mumbaphilia (J.E.) (estimate: $5,000,000 – 7,000,000) and Fever graph (algorithm for serendipity) (estimate: $4,000,000 – 6,000,000) as well as an exceptional Mark Tansey oil painting from 1987 (estimate: $8,000,000 – 12,000,000). Works in the collection hail from a number of notable collections including the Collection of Mary & John Pappajohn, Vital Line: A New York Collection, and the Collection of Ambassador Trevor Traina. In total, the 35 lot auction is estimated to realize in excess of $100 million.
The full selection of work on offer in the sale will be on view at Christie’s New York in an exhibition free and open to the public beginning May 4, 2024 until May 14, 2024.
